This session will look at the dangers of student volunteering in orphanages or similar institutions overseas. We will give detailed information about the research that is behind the issue, such as the breadth of the problem and the issues it creates with children, and explain about a new campaign that is aimed at university volunteer centres. We will also give advice about alternative types of trips that can be just as rewarding for the students but do not endanger local people.

The past year has shown us how much more prepared we need to be to adapt our volunteering programmes, not only at Higher Education Institutions but also for third sector organisations.

So where are we heading? Is a hybrid approach here to stay? What does it mean and what does it look like?

During this workshop we will discuss ideas, share challenges and support each other in coming up with suggestions that might be useful for Volunteering Professionals in the sector

Mariana Vieira da Rocha, originally from Portugal, started volunteering when she was 7 years old and has not stopped since. She's moved to the UK ten years ago and has been working in Volunteering and Higher Education for the past 9 years. A review of the 6 principles of youth social action by the #iwill campaign, and how to conduct an audit of what these mean and how they are currently embedded in your organisation's student opportunities. The session is designed to support staff to reflect on their practice, take away a framework to audit programmes, and examples from Student Hubs of how this can be delivered in practice.
