Student Volunteering Week 2022 is the 21st year that the national celebration of volunteering has taken place.  This year the week will be taking place from 7th - 13th February 2022.

Student Volunteering Week celebrates student volunteering in the following ways:

  1. Improves student wellbeing
  2. Develops students' employability
  3. Contributes positively to the wider and local community life

To find out more about what students all over the country are up to, make sure to follow the Student Volunteering Week social media channels on Twitter and Instagram, and tag us to share your stories.

Our national team, led by the Student Volunteering Network, will be available to offer help to you in running your SVW activities, before, during and after the week.

This year, some Higher Education Institutions across the country have made their events open to any student or staff, which means you can join in from anywhere in the world and take part in Student Volunteering Week!

Have a look below!

Tuesday, 8th Feb // 1pm (GMT): Volunteer with the Woodland Trust – Nature’s Calendar

Nature’s Calendar is a citizen science project run by the Woodland Trust, asking the public to submit records on the timing of key natural events (phenology). As the UK’s largest phenology database, with nearly 3 million records dating back to 1736, the project is invaluable for research into the impacts of weather and climate change on our wildlife. Join us to learn more about the project background, phenology in general, some of key Nature’s Calendar scientific outputs and how you can get involved.

Tuesday, 8th February //  3pm - 4.30pm (GMT) Idea Generation and Campaigns  (Student Hubs)

Held during Student Volunteering Week, we are bringing back this popular session from last year and combining it with our May campaigning session. The session will encourage students to explore the process of generating ideas for activities, projects, and their passions, and cover what tips and tools they can take forward in any campaigning work. This is also a great session for any staff who want to join us (either with the mindset of supporting students to do this work, or for your own activities!), designed to get attendees inspired, consider more about idea generation, and providing our top tips for campaigning work and self-reflection.

Register in advance for this event for any updates and reminders: Idea Generation and Campaigns Workshop Tickets, Tue 8 Feb 2022 at 15:00 | Eventbrite

Thursday, 10th Feb // 3pm-4pm (GMT): Supporting Students to be Changemakers at your organisation

L If you're looking for a staff-only space during Student Volunteering Week to consider your personal development, you may want to join Fiona Walsh from Student Hubs for the session on Supporting Students to be Changemakers at your Organisation, a more targeted session exploring the barriers students face in making change both at their universities and in organisations they are involved in/work/support. The session covers how we as staff can guide them through these challenges, be their advocates, and help them practice resilience. Tickets are only £20 not including Eventbrite fees, and the session is recorded so if you can't attend in person, you can still watch it back at another (potentially less hectic) time

Thursday, 10th Feb // 6pm-7pm (GMT): The Voluntourist: can international volunteering be ethical?

The LSE Volunteer Centre will be screening 'The Voluntourist', a short film developed by the Chloe Sanguinetti that tells the stories of international volunteers and the potential problems in this industry.

The LSE Volunteer Centre pledged in 2016 not to support volunteering in orphanages abroad, whether undertaken by organised groups or individuals for short or longer periods of time. We believe, as a progressive academic institution, that we have the responsibility not to promote such opportunities and to help educate the student body about the reality of this. However, we also believe that volunteering can be done ethically and we want to encourage students to do this.

The evening will start with the screening of The Voluntourist, after which space shall be provided for discussion. The LSE Volunteer Centre Manager, David Coles, will chair the discussion with Chloe and invite comments and questions from students and staff attending.

Friday, 11th February // 11am-12pm (GMT): Volunteering for Employability

Have you considered how volunteering can be an amazing way to help you build skills and confidence when looking towards graduate employment? In this short info session, the VTeam at the University of West London will be discussing how volunteering experience can make a difference to your next steps.
